Millions of children around the world are living in desperate poverty, with no medical care, no education, no shelter, no decent clothing, and above all, no hope for the future. Distressed Children & Infants International (DCI) is dedicated to helping these children, one child at a time.

DCI's goal is to help provide these necessities for impoverished children and focus on integral development that seeks to reduce the root causes of poverty, not just its consequences. DCI is committed to addressing children's rights and contributing to fulfilling the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Distressed Children & Infants International (DCI) aims to ensure basic human rights for all children by providing education, health care, proper nutrition and shelter. DCI encourage sustainable community development and income generating programs. We welcome you to learn more about our activities and join us. Distressed Children & Infants International (DCI), Inc is a US registered 501(c)(3) (IRS Tax Exempt) Non-profit charitable organization.

Our activities

Sunchild Sponsorship Program

DCI is Sponsoring 800 children in Bangladesh, where nearly five million children between the ages of 5 and 15 have no education and are forced to work for little or no pay (UNICEF: Nov 2005). There are 450,000 children living on the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Many are physically and sexually abused. Girls, in particular, are easy prey for gangs who run street brothels. For just $12 a month, you can make a world of difference in a child’s life. With your support we are preventing underprivileged children from dropping out of school to earn a living; we are providing education, health care for the children and income generating activities for the families.

Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Program

At DCI, we feel that once a child has been chosen for our Sun Child Sponsorship program we have a moral obligation to do everything we can to promote and safeguard the child’s welfare. The Patuakhali District, one of DCI’s Sun Child Sponsorship project locations, was devastated by Cyclone Sidr in November, 2007. Because we already had infrastructure in place there, DCI was able to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation aid to the local community. DCI is continuing to work to build damaged homes and schools as fund is becoming available. But still today there are many families who do not have a home. Time is of the essence for these families. The rainy season is just beginning, and will become more extreme as the summer progresses. As you can imagine, having a solid roof over their heads will make a world of difference to them. Our goal is to rebuild at least 100 more homes over the course of next couple of months.

Childhood Blindness Prevention Program

Today the economic burden and loss in productivity due to blindness in Bangladesh amounts to nearly a billion dollars per year. The main cause of blindness in Bangladesh is cataracts. Even though cataracts can be easily cured by a simple operation, most of the Bangladeshi population has no access to cataract treatment services. With the aim of reaching out to those most vulnerable to blindness, children and infants, DCI has initiated a Childhood Blindness Prevention Program. Our main objective is to offer free diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases for poor children.

Income Generating Activities (IGA)

DCI provides life-skills training, and technical support to families of our sponsored children so they can gradually become financially independent. Our programs include extensive training in new gardening methods, methods to increase farm yields, and farm marketing. DCI provides vegetable seeds, livestock (ducks, goats, cows and chickens), as well as training and provisions (the lease of ponds, etc.) for fish farming.
